World city prices

Cost of living in 72 cities, using July 2014 exchange rates

Think of all the goods and services that an average family consumes during a typical month. Those goods and services include food, clothes, utilities, transport, healthcare, entertainment, education services, and many others. The chart below shows how much all of these items together cost in different cities around the world.

There is clearly a lot of variation in the cost of living around the world. The most expensive cities are in the rich countries where prices are three times higher than in the cheaper cities. Still, have in mind that salaries in the developed countries are much more than three times higher than salaries in many less developed countries. Therefore, low prices do not automatically imply a high standard of living.

The data for the charts are based on the “Prices and Earnings” publication by the United Bank of Switzerland, a reliable and long-standing source of information on international prices and wages. We calculate and show updated numbers with the most recent levels of exchange rates. You can use the drop box menus to select different currencies or types of products. Below the chart are links to specific pages for each city.
